Best Buy Hoping Holiday Procrastinators Reined in by Free Shipping
Best Buy once again is doubling down with fast delivery in what is now the final home stretch before Christmas Day one week from today.
The electronics retailer will tried to rein in the last minute shoppers for the holidays by offering the two-day shipping for free for their online orders that are placed by Tuesday December 22 at 10:30 a.m.
Orders that are placed by the deadline are expected to be delivered prior to Christmas.
The upgrade to free shipping has the goal of ushering in additional sales in what looks to be a lackluster holiday season for the electronics retailer.
The company offered a promotion that was similar last year but started it one week sooner and was only for orders that totaled over $35.
One of Best Buy’s biggest competitors, Amazon has free shipping for two days for its Prime program members for $99 per year.
Best Buy also has been offering free shipping for any size of order since the latter part of October through January 2. Target Corp has promoted free shipping for all its online purchases during the shopping season. The cutoff date for the free delivery on items to arrive prior to Christmas is December 21.
It is not likely that two-day delivery will be a big stretch for the electronic retailer. Best Buy has made huge strides in cutting down on delivery time for packages to the doorsteps of customers in the past few years since it started shipping items from stores rather than rely on fulfillment centers that could be farther away.
In the most recent ranking for top retailers by a firm that tracks the speed of shipping called StellaService, Best Buy was tops on the list for speed. During the third quarter, Best Buy delivered 83% of its packages within a period of two days, and 92% within four days.
The average time of delivery was 2.3 days in comparison to an average of more than 4.2 days amongst other retailers within the same study.
