Toys “R” Us Shutters Times Square Store
On Wednesday, at 6 p.m. the Toy “R” Us flagship store at Times Square in New York City closed its doors for the last time.
For over 14 years, the store on Times Square offered some scale, awe and a bit of chaos to all its many tiny visitors. The Ferris wheel and its themed cars, the robotic 20-foot T. Rex that roared as people walked by, the Playmobile pirates and a Barbie dollhouse with room for a group of grownups.
The store closing puts a damper on the area as it leaves Times Square without an attraction for just children.
The Toys “R” Us store was in the 110,000 square foot location since 2001, which makes it one of Times Square’s first retailers when the memories of local peep shows were not all that distant.
The lease for the store expires in January and the company made the decision to not renew it to save on what is paid in rent, said a spokesperson.
The company, which has 17 locations in the area of New York City, is currently searching for another location in Manhattan.
The savings likely will be substantial said the law firm that leases the property for owners Bow Tie Partners. The cost for the ground floor space that is occupied by Toy “R” Us, would cost approximately $42 million per year.
The price would be impossible for any one store to pay for in Times Square in 2016. The law firm said Toys “R” Us was paying only half of today’s going rate.
Part of the space has already been rented to Gap Inc, which will open its namesake store as well as its flagship Old Navy store that will take about 60% of the space with the rest not yet leased.
By Wednesday at 6 p.m. only a very few shoppers remained inside the store and in the shadow of the Ferris wheel. A crowd that was disappointed stood outside with small children and strollers but no one else could go inside.
